Cheap Ways to Secure Your Home
08/08/10
Your home can never be secured entirely. But you can make it so difficult for the burglar, that he chooses another house instead. And it does not have to cost anything at all.
The best way to avoid burglary is not to show, that you are away. Try to vary your routines, so it is not obvious that you are away from home at specific times of the day or night. It might be difficult, but try to change the departure and arrival just a little bit from day to day.
If you are on vacation for a longer time, it is best to stop the delivering of mail and newspaper. If your mail box is filled with post, it is easy for the thief to see, that you are away. You can also arrange with the neighbor, that he will park the car the car in front of your house sometimes. Do also make arrangement about mowing the lawn and removing the snow.
And finally do not write on Facebook, Twitter when you will be away; especially if you have an open profile that everybody can read. The thief is also beginning to use a computer, when they are searching for house to break into.
Light is a simple but effective way to avoid break-ins. A lot of light will scare the burglars, so they find another house instead. Do always make sure that obvious break-in places are well lighted. Floodlight on the corners of the house can also light the wall up, so the thieves cannot hide.
You can also use light in another way, to protect you from break-ins. Buy a plug-in timers, so you automatically can turn the light on and off. Then the burglar will never know, if you are home or not. Just make sure, that you vary the on and off time, so it is not obvious, that you are doing it with an automatic timer.
Do not leave tools in an unlocked shed. Put a large padlock on the door. And do not leave ladders outside the home. Many thieves do not bring anything but count on the things, the can find outside peoples homes. So do not make it easier for them by providing them with the tools they need.
Many burglars use the window to get into the house. So if you can protect your windows, you can avoid many break-ins. You can use a simple steal bolt or rod to make sure that the window cannot be opened more than a few inches (to get fresh air in the night). And it is easily removed, if you need to open the window more.
If you feel the above isnt enough, you can also invest in an alarm system and security cameras. And a final word; remember the obvious. Lock the door and close the windows when you leave home.
